Sadly getting any doctor to take me seriously was the hardest part of Ethan’s diagnoses. From the age of 3 up until he was 5 all the professionals kept reassuring me that he was just a late potty trainer and there was nothing to worry about.
Having Potty trained my eldest 2 years before Ethan I knew something was wrong. Ethan just DIDN’T seem to know when he was urinating. It took one and a half years for doctors to work this out for themselves, that’s one and a half years of stressfully unsuccessful potty training and constant trips back and fourth to the doctors before they even run a test.
My advice to ANYONE who suspects their child is more than a “late potty trainer” is to take a trip to your doctor and not give up.
Maybe it’s an instinct but parents / guardians always seem to know when something’s wrong with their kids, trust yourself.
The doctors ended up running urine and urodynamic tests follow a week later by a timed release test. FINALLY they diagnosed Ethan with Overactive bladder disorder a little before his 5th birthday. Surprisingly it was a relief to be finally given a reason why my 4 year old wouldn’t train.
After having the diagnoses I tried looking it up on the net, unfortunately at the time there wasn’t anything about OAB in kids, which was a shame because the leaflets they give you don’t really go into too much detail.
I then set up this website so that other parents can learn from the questions I myself had to ask, and the mistakes I have made.
